2 Chapter 6 Cycle Times Figure 6.2 Cycle times are decreased in larger but not smaller, companies Key message Based on a 3-year moving average, the Major companies represented have predominantly maintained shorter development times than the industry as a whole. Methodology Industry data: The data is displayed as a 3-year moving average (although the data point for 2006 includes data from 2005 and 2006 only). Development times have been calculated for 293 (74%) of the 398 New Molecular Entities (NMEs) that were first marketed in the period 1st January 1995 to 31st December NMEs with development times exceeding 25 years and all vaccines were excluded from this analysis. Data for Major companies: These data, representing 139 NMEs, are displayed as a 3-year moving average (although the data point for 2006 includes data from 2005 and 2006 only). Note that the activities of companies that now form part of a larger company, due to merger and acquisition activities, have been attributed to the company group as it existed in 2006. Key Definitions New Molecular Entity (NME): A new chemical entity or biological (including products of biotechnology) that has not been previously available for therapeutic use in man and are destined to be made available as a ‘prescription only medicine’, to be used for the cure, alleviation, treatment, prevention or in vivo diagnosis of diseases in man. Vaccines, new salts, pro drugs, metabolites and esters of existing compounds and certain biological compounds (e.g. antigens) are not classified as NMEs. Combination products are excluded from the list unless one or more of the constituents of the combination product has never been previously available. Development time: Time taken from compound code assigned to first world launch CMR International Performance Metrics Programme / Source Annual Survey of New Molecular Entity First Launches / New Medicine Launches 2006 A complete guide to New Molecular Entities (NMEs) launched world-wide. * The development time data point for 2006 includes data from 2005 and 2006 only Major companies are defined as those spending ≥US$ 1.8 billion in 2006 on ethical pharmaceutical R&D.
