1 Housekeeping Eggs! If you do not have your eggs today, you will lose the point value for them. If your lab report is not passed in today, you will lose 10% per day. Twitter I’m hoping this may help keep some of you on track with homework and due dates! Student Success Wall – Write down 3 goals you have for yourself for this class. This can be anything from passing a test, to doing homework for a week, to increasing your test score by 5%, to getting a 90% on a quiz. When you achieve a goal, I will out your name (and goal) on a star and post it on the wall. I want to fill this wall for the end of January!

2 Housekeeping cont’d Unit Test Part 2 – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3rd
Photosynthesis – Monday and Tuesday Cellular Respiration – Wednesday and Thursday Test review day – Friday, October 31st UNIT VOCABULARY due for unit test. Homework questions due for Friday, October 31st (See website from Thursday, October 23rd)

3 Photosynthesis Let’s Get Into This! Let’s Get Into This!

4 What Is it? Photosynthesis: The conversion of light energy to chemical energy that is stored in glucose or other organic compounds. Occurs in plants, algae, and some prokaryotes such as cyanobacteria. Autotrophs vs. heterotrophs. Organelles involved? Chloroplast – Absorbs sunlight and uses it to drive the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll – A green pigment located within the chloroplasts of plants Stoma – A microscopic pore surrounded by guard cells in the epidermis of leaves and stems that allows gas exchange between the environment and the interior of the plant. Stroma – The fluid of the chloroplast surrounding the thylakoid membrane. Thylakoid – A flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast, used to convert light energy to chemical energy. Grana – A stacked portion of the thylakoid membrane in chloroplast. Two stages: Light Reactions and the Calvin Cycle.

5 ½ million chloroplasts per square mm of leaf surface
Found mainly in the mesophyll - the tissue in the interior of the leaf. Why do leaves appear green? The chlorophyll molecules of chloroplasts absorb violet-blue and red light (the colours most effective in driving photosynthesis) and reflect green light, so that’s why leaves appear green. 6CO2 + 12H2O + Light Energy  6O2 + C6H12O6 + 6H2O

7 Stage 1 – light reactions (photo Part)
The light reactions are the steps of photosynthesis that convert solar energy to chemical energy. Light absorbed by the chlorophyll drives a transfer of electrons and hydrogen from water to an acceptor, NAPD+. Because water is split during this process, the light reactions give off oxygen as a by product. Occurs in the thylakoids. The light reactions produce oxygen, ATP and NADPH.

8 Stage 2 – the Calvin cycle
Calvin cycle – Named after Melvin Calvin, 1940s. Cycle begins by using carbon dioxide from the air into organic molecules already present in the chloroplast. Initial incorporation of carbon into organic compounds is called carbon fixation. The Calvin cycle is where the sugar is produced. None of the steps involved in the Calvin cycle involve light directly, but the cycle still occurs in most plants during daylight – the light is required for the light reactions to occur, as the products of the light reactions are needed for the Calvin cycle to begin. Occurs in the stroma. The Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to produce sugar, as well as NADP+ and ADP+, which are then used to start the light reaction again, once mixed with water.
