The maternal age effect on nondisjunction of meiotic chromosomes (as measured by trisomy production) in humans (top panel) is compared with age-dependent defects observed in SMC1β-deficient female mice (bottom panel). The graph of the frequency of human trisomies with advancing maternal age is modified from Hassold and Hunt (2001). The percentage of homologs present as single chromatids in mice lacking SMC1β, which reflects the failure of sister-chromatid cohesion, was modified from Hodges et al. (2005).
