LinkedIn – What is it ? THE professional social networking product
Launched on May 5, 2003 Owned by Microsoft since late 2016 Currently has approx. 500 million users Like many other social media products, it uses the concept of interpersonal connection and uses that to establish a professional social network Major competitor is Facebook, however LinkedIn’s user base like the clear separation of personal from professional

Six Degrees then Three Degrees of Separation
Based on the theory that there is only six degrees of separation between our self and anyone or anything else on the earth, purely based on friendships or connections Originated in 1929 by Hungarian author Frigyes Karinthy who wrote a series of short stories exploring the concept Studies have shown that six degrees is about right, with some limitations like isolated tribes LinkedIn limits the degrees of connection to 3 I have just over 500 contacts and 24 million people in my network or equivalent to the population of Australia So my network includes approx. 5% of the LinkedIn user base You can type * into the search text box to find your network size When I joined in 2004 there were only 1 million users so many people I knew had not joined, the network effect kicked in much later. Now it’s the exception that my contacts aren’t on LinkedIn

Tailored headline Capabilities not just titles Use | to separate For example, mine currently is Agile Project Manager | Iteration Leader | Problem Solver | Enabling teams to deliver maximum business value | Available Powerful summary Call to action at end of summary including contact information Links to other media Keep it simple and more personal than a resume Contribute Like articles so that your networks sees valuable content Comment appropriately Write articles that display your expertise

LinkedIn Little Known Feature #1
Click on the Jobs briefcase and then Update Career interests in the middle of the page, you can flag that you are open to recruiters who have LinkedIn Recruiter. Note not all recruiters have this and only one or two people per office due to the cost

Under the Me / Privacy and Settings you able to turn off the “Viewers of this profile also viewed” sidebar which shows other people’s profiles and “click bait” to move away from your profile

Other ways to get your professional profile out there:- Website – workfolio Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Slack Each has its place and can cross reference each other. Many small businesses use Facebook such to show their wares. Facebook Connect is fast becoming a major Identity Management player. i.e. login using your Facebook account
