1 Elements and their atoms
The Periodic Table Elements and their atoms

2

3 Elements and their atoms
Remember that elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number The atomic number is equal to the number of protons located in the nucleus Due to the neutral charge of an atom, the number of protons and electrons will be the same; therefore, when looking at the periodic table, it could be said that the atomic number also equals the number of electrons of a normal, neutral atom

4

5 The atomic mass is the total mass located in the nucleus of the atom and is the sum of the protons and neutrons When working with atomic mass, the number will be rounded to the nearest whole number In order to find the number of neutrons in the nucleus, first round the atomic mass to the nearest whole number and then subtract the atomic number If given the number of neutrons, first round the atomic mass to the nearest whole number and then subtract the number of neutrons from the atomic mass in order to find the number of protons

6

7 Atomic number = Number of Protons
Number of Protons = Number of Electrons Atomic Mass – Atomic number = Number of Neutrons Atomic Mass – Number of Neutrons = Number of Protons

8 Single letter element symbols are always capitalized
Any element symbols that are 2 letters, the first letter is always capitalized while the second letter is always lower case
