1 Do Now 8/29/2016 Explain how a compound is different from a mixture

2 Essential Question What are the differences between physical properties and the chemical properties of matter?

3 Matter What is matter? What is mass?
What is the difference between mass and weight? Textbook page 6

4 What is Matter Made of? What is an atom? What is an element?
What is a molecule? What is the relationship between the atom, element, and molecule?

5 Properties and Changes in Matter
Extensive Properties depend on the amount of matter that is present. (volume, mass and amount of energy) Intensive Properties do not depend on the amount of matter present. (boiling point, melting point, density, ability to conduct or transfer heat and electricity)

6 Physical Properties A physical property can be observed without changing the identity of the substance.(boiling points, melting points) A physical change is a change in the substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance.

7 Do Now Think about what yoy know about Oxygen, make a list of the physical properties and the chemical properties.

8 Draw Representations of the Following, be prepared to explain your drawing.
An atom An element A molecule Mass vs Weight Flow chart to show the relationship between the atom, element, and molecule Physical change of a substance

9 Change of State A change of state is a physical property because it does not change the identity of the substance. It is a physical change of a substance from one state to another.

10 Chemical Properties and Chemical Changes
A chemical property is the ability of the substance to change into a new substance

11 Chemical Change or Reaction
In a chemical change, one or more substances are converted into different substance , this is also called a chemical reaction.

12 Energy and Changes in Matter
Energy in the form of heat or light is always needed for any type of change to take place

13 The Law of Conservation of Energy
In a chemical change energy is neither created or destroyed, it is simply rearranged to form a new product.

14 Classification of Matter

15 Mixture A mixture is a blend of two or more kinds of matter that are mixed together but not chemically combined, each of which retains its own identity and property.

16 Type of Mixtures Homogeneous Mixture Heterogeneous Mixture
Uniform Composition Also called solutions Can be separated Not Uniformed Throughout Are not solutions because heavier particles settle to the bottom

17 Pure Substances A pure substance has a fixed composition and can be either compounds and elements. Every sample of a pure substance has the same chemical and physical properties. Every sample of a given pure substance has exactly the same composition.
