JOINT INJURIES Dislocations – An Injury to the soft tissues (ligaments, blood vessels, muscles, tendons) Signs Deformity Other symptoms similar to a fracture

JOINT INJURIES Treatment for dislocations Same as fracture
Elevate and ice Stay off of it Will be some form of immobilization

JOINT INJURIES SPRAIN- An injury to the soft tissues around a joint that occurs when a joint moves beyond normal Range of Motion

Swelling & discoloration are most obvious Very similar to dislocations and fractures Treatments Same as fracture (immobilize) Rehab is lengthy because weakness of ligaments (no blood flow)

JOINT INJURIES Strain – caused by overworking muscles Too much running
Too much weight lifting Too much walking

JOINT INJURIES Signs of strains Aches, pains, & stiffness
Reduced range of motion Pain peaks in 48 hours

Massage & stretching

Numbness in the arms & hands; legs & feet Difficulty in breathing Similar to head injuries Can’t move the body

Can’t move the body

Keep the victim still, unless life is threatened ABC if needed Treat for shock & call 911

JOINT INJURIES Head injuries – most common cause of motor vehicle deaths Signs Blood out of ear canal or around eye socket Pupils are of unequal size Dizziness Confusion & disorientation
