Global Need of Standard I/O Connection Interface for Cellular Phone Presented to GSC Ottawa, Canada April 29, 2003 Jindam Mok TTA, Korea April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 1 SOURCE:TTA TITLE:Global Need of Standard I/O Connection Interface for Cellular Phone AGENDA ITEM: GSC, Item 1.3 – User Working Group GSC-8089

Introduction 24 pin I/O interface unit is used for utilizing digital cellular phone in Korea Enhance the facilitation of recharging batteries and connecting between digital cellular phone and other auxiliary equipments Recommend the specification on input/output connection interface of cellular phone Reduce the resource consumption and environmental pollution due to reusing the battery charger, hands-free and data communication equipments Applicable for any cellular phone, including IMT-2000, in the world Much benefit for cellular users, manufacturers, & common carriers GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 2 April 28 ~May 1, 2003

Background of Standardization of I/O Interface for Cellular Phone At first we tried to make a standard by DTH(Desk Top Holder) type But it was unfeasible to make a Practical Standard Outer Shape of Cellular Phone Recharging Battery is no longer the subject of standardization now Insertion type Input/Output Connector is adopted as the standard for Cellular Phone Battery Recharging To maximize the convenience it has been considered not only to recharge the batteries, but also to utilize the hands-free and data communication facilities April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 3

Standard on I/O Connection Interface of Digital Cellular Phone 24 pin I/O interface unit is used for utilizing digital cellular phone - 7 pins for battery charging - 5 pins for hands-free - 8 pins for data communication - 4 pins for optional functions April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 4

Test Standards for Certification Test Standard on I/O Connector of Digital Cellular Phone : general performance, temperature stress, mechanical stress, chemical test, durability test, and abnormal test. Test Standard on Battery Charger of Digital Cellular Phone : basic functional test and the reliability test. TTA Certified Mark endowed through the test by these standards April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 5

User Aspect When batteries out, all users are suffering much inconvenience and the sense of isolation from his family or intimate friends Sometimes it causes a heavy loss or a dangerous condition in an emergency If standard environments for battery recharging are established nearby, users portability and utilization of cellular phones will be highly enhanced Other convenience and benefit are also brought by additional functions, i.e. data communication and hands-free, with TTA standard interface connector April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 6

Industrial Aspect Due to the facilitation of cellular battery recharging by these standard environments, their mobile system throughput is highly enhanced, both mobile carrier and cellular manufacturer will have much benefit If the auxiliary equipments, i.e. data communication, hands-free, etc., have this standard interface, relevant manufacturers and IT & mobile companies will also be activated largely According to the operable time increase of cellular phones, distribution and circulation markets are also encouraged and activated April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 7

Public Aspect We used to discard old battery chargers whenever purchasing new cellular phones Now, auxiliary equipments including battery chargers with TTA standard interface can be reused It is expected to contribute to the expenditure reduction (over $300,000,000/year in Korea) and environmental conservation. Sooner or later, these standard will apply to the public facilities, i.e. waiting rooms of station, airport, etc April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 8

Conclusion June, 2000, we had started to make standards December, 2001, three relevant standards are fixed 2002, most of all cellular phones that is sold in Korea are adopting these TTA standards Now, all battery chargers with standard interface must be sold separately from main cellular phones It helps us reduce quite a considerable resource consumption, and prevent environmental pollution We hope these standards also give much benefit for worldwide users, manufacturers, mobile carriers, etc. April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 9

Mechanical Specifications of I/O Connector for Digital Cellular Phone This connection plug has 3 concave keys to prevent standard I/O connector from being connected wrong. I/O interface of this standard is a 24 pin connector which is divided into two parts, i.e. a socket of digital cellular phone and a plug of charger cable. When the part of the I/O socket keys faces upper side and we look into the front side of the socket of digital cellular phone, 24 pin allocation is increasing in numerical order from left to right. This pin number is a reference of arranging each pin function. April 28 ~May 1, 2003 GSC-8, OTTAWASlide 17
