So western farmers (Pennsylvania, Virginia) often had their corn crop ROT before it got to market!

3. The Solution? Corn Whiskey!
This way, the crop wouldn’t rot—and, let’s face it, Americans were BIG drinkers in the 1700s and 1800s—alcoholism was a serious national problem.

4. Who knows the connection between illegal whiskey and stock-car racing?

To raise money for the new national government, why not tax those hillbillies (the western farmers) on the whiskey—they’re Jefferson supporters, anyway!

They beat up tax collectors, formed militias, and generally raised hell!

…by sending 13,000 troops into Pennsylvania
