1 ALK and NRG1 Fusions Coexist in a Patient with Signet Ring Cell Lung Adenocarcinoma
Lucia Anna Muscarella, PhD, Domenico Trombetta, PhD, Federico Pio Fabrizio, PhD  Journal of Thoracic Oncology  Volume 12, Issue 10, Pages e161-e163 (October 2017) DOI: /j.jtho Copyright © 2017 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Terms and Conditions

2 Figure 1 (A) Microscopic features of lymph node metastases from adenocarcinoma with signet ring cell pattern (hematoxylin and eosin; original magnification, ×100). (B and C) Strong thyroid transcription factor-1 (original magnification, ×200) and weak p63 (original magnification, ×100) immunoreactivity in neoplastic cells. (D) Diffuse cytoplasmatic positivity for anaplastic lymphoma kinase protein in signet ring adenocarcinoma cells (×200). 3 Figure 2 (A) Results of a break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay for ALK receptor tyrosine kinase gene (ALK) in cancer cells. The green probe hybridizes to the region immediately 5′ to ALK, and the red probe hybridizes to the 3′ region. The separation of red and green probe signals (arrows) indicates a chromosomal rearrangement involving ALK. Close apposition of red and green probe signals indicates an intact wild-type copy of ALK. (B) Results of a break-apart FISH assay for neuregulin 1 gene (NRG1) in cancer cells. The green probe hybridizes to the region immediately 5′ to NRG1, and the red probe hybridizes to the 3′ region. The separation of red and green probe signals (arrows) indicates a chromosomal rearrangement involving NRG1. Abbreviations: EML4, echinoderm microtubule associated protein like 4 gene; CD74, CD74 molecule gene.
