4 HER EARLY LIFE… -Born in Topeka, Kansas in 1917
-When 1 month old, her family moved to Chicago

5 THE MOVE TO CHICAGO By the age of 11, she complied a notebook of rhymed poetry At 13, she published a poem in a popular children's magazine called American Childhood. When 16, she met James Weldon Johnson and Langston Hughes

She initially lived on Champlain with her family After she married Henry Lowington Blakely II when 21- years- old with whom she had 2 children, she lived in a kitchenette apartment on 43rd and South Park

Her first H.S. experience was at Hyde Park High School, an all-white school on the Southside She then transferred to Wendall Phillips, a predominantly black high school, which broadened her racial perspective

After receiving much critical acclaim for her first book, she wrote a second book, Annie Allen, in 1949, for which she earned a Pulitzer Prize It was particularly notable because she was the first African-American poet to win this prize

17 Her LEGACY In 2001, our school changed its name from Southside College Preparatory Academy to Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy A Middle School also made her its namesake, and it is located in Oak Park, IL
