2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards Training for Test Administrators Key information for the administering the four domains (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking ) of the ELDA DISCLAMER - This training deals only with the physical administration of the four ELDA exams and not the operational logistics involving test coordinators. The later will be covered by MI in a separate training for district test coordinators. MANUALS – divided by grade cluster (3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (Before) Assessment Security You are responsible for security of all materials before, after and during administration You must be at the administration site during the entire administration Remembering, reproducing or disclosing assessment material is NOT ALLOWED Follow district and state procedures .

Bar codes: Green 3-5, Blue 6-8, Purple 9-12 For Reading, Writing and Listening max is 20 students/administrator For ELDA speaking, max is 6 students/ administrator COLOR CODING: Administration manuals are also color-coded by grade. STUDENT/ADMIN RATIO: Additional help administering the assessment must be enlisted if the number of students exceeds those prescribed above.

Test Materials 2004 ELDA (Before)
State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (Before) Test Materials A Plastic Bag for each student contains: Student Background Questionnaire Test Booklet for each domain Speaking response cassette Additional Materials: Cassette player Cassette recorder (each student) Prompting cassettes for Listening (2) & Speaking BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE: is included in Appendix E of your Administration Manual.

Prepare Assessment Site
2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (Before) Prepare Assessment Site Find secure area to store materials Remove or cover “clues” around site Ensure an adequate workspace for each student Desks/seating separated by a reasonable distance Two No.2 pencils per student CLUES: Word charts, Grammar tips or English language labels on items. WORKSPACE: large enough for a test booklet AND a cassette recorder for the speaking test. SEATING: far enough apart not to distract, be able to see the work of others, or hear other student answers during the speaking assessment.

2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (Before) Oral Script Use Review scripts before administration A script for each domain Read scripts verbatim for administration SCRIPTS: read aloud instructions to be read verbatim to students during the test. TEST BOOKLET: Contains printed versions of the scripts so students can read along as the administrator reads the instructions.

Administration Guidelines
2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (During) Administration Guidelines ELDA is not a timed assessment Encourage all students to finish Answer student questions about test directions NOT test questions No penalty for wrong answers No student talking during administration ALL STUDENTS FINISH: Towards the end of the assessment encourage all students to try their best to finish the exam. Remind students at least once during the administration. WALK AROUND: during administration make sure students are marking their answers in the right places in the test booklet. NO TALKING: EXCEPT during the speaking assessment.

2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (During) Key Steps for Administration Distribute assessment materials to students before testing Explain to students they will be taking a test Instruct students to be quiet during administration Inform students about breaks Instruct students to check that their name is on their test booklet

Special Situations Defective Test Booklet Students Who Become Sick

Breaks Breaks are at the Administrators’ discretion.
2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (During) Breaks Breaks are at the Administrators’ discretion. Students may not leave the room during break Suggested break times: - Reading & Writing: short break after 30 min. - Speaking: No break necessary - Listening: short break between cassettes DO NOT allow students to leave the room or talk during the break. Students may stand and stretch at desk. BATHROOM: 1 student at a time may go to the bathroom as necessary. TESTING TIMES: Speaking approximately 20 minutes. Listening 3-5 & 6-8: 45/30 for first & second tapes : 45/45.

Collecting Test Booklets
2004 ELDA State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (After) Collecting Test Booklets Finished students close their booklet & raise their hand Collect booklets from each student Check student name on front cover Give silent work to students who finish early Count booklets before dismissing students Thank students for putting forth their best effort When collecting student books DO NOT allow students to “pass around” test booklets after they are finished. CHECK STUDENT NAME on the speaking cassette
