5 “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told the NFL Network of his protest. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.”

6 Colin Kaepernick explained why he will not stand during the national anthem: “There are a lot of things that are going on that are unjust [that] people aren’t being held accountable for. And that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that this country stands for — freedom, liberty, justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.”

7 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, basketball icon, shared his perspective with the Washington Post: “One of the ironies of the way some people express their patriotism is to brag about our freedoms, especially freedom of speech. But then we claim that those who exercise the freedom to express dissatisfaction with the government’s ability to uphold the Constitution is unpatriotic.”

8 “I understand his message,” said Staff Sgt
“I understand his message,” said Staff Sgt. Jonathan Felix to the New York Times, who said he has been deployed four times to Iraq and Afghanistan. “There is a lot of oppression in the world and he’s fighting for people just the way I have been. It’s mind-boggling that so many people are against him when he’s fighting by taking a stand.”

9 Fans like Cody and Shiloh Oden spoke to the New York Times of cops who are friends or relatives in the military. “It’s tough, we loved him,” Cody said. “I really appreciate that he’s put up his own money, maybe a million dollars, for his cause. But the anthem, it’s not the right place to use his voice.”

10 “There's no question about it
“There's no question about it. Colin Kaepernick's decision to protest the national anthem by sitting, and then later by kneeling, is a divisive subject,” according to CBS sports news. “Americans do not see eye-to-eye on the issue for a variety of reasons, and Kaepernick's actions have resulted in him becoming, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the ‘most disliked’ player in the NFL in a recent poll.”

11 Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report spoke to seven anonymous NFL executives, and found that their outrage over Kaepernick’s stance was near universal. “I don’t want him anywhere near my team,” one front office executive said of Kaepernick, according to Freeman. “He’s a traitor.”
