What do we mean by civil society
Open Forum on CSO Development Effectiveness: CSOs can be defined to include all non-market and non-state organizations outside of the family in which people organize themselves to pursue shared interests in the public domain. CSOs often operate on the basis of shared values, beliefs, and objectives with the people they serve or represent. In WWF's understanding, CSOs may also include: membership/community-based cooperatives in which individual producers come together to promote their common interests on the market
4
Civil society is a key agent for change
Partners in implementing rights-based approaches to conservation rights to resources rights to participation and representation holding governments and the private sector accountable Essential for delivering on our social policies

Essential for achieving lasting impacts effectiveness and scale mutual learning sustainability
6
How we engage with civil society As CSO peers in:
ad hoc/short-term collaborations coalitions, networks, alliances, platforms and campaigns long-term and mutually agreed partnerships (sometimes including provision of funds) in their own right But also by: commissioning CSOs to implement parts of our own programme
7
Equitable partnerships
All partnerships should be equitable, respectful, based on agreed goals and shared values Characterised by: mutual ownership and empowerment clearly defined roles, expectations, responsibilities mutually agreed mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation and information sharing systematic learning based on participation, openness and trust mutual transparency and accountability
8
Our aid effectiveness commitments
When we provide funds we: Align our support with the CSOs' programmatic goals, strategies and administrative systems Strive towards the provision of core/budget/programme funding, rather than projects
