3 What really persuades you (teens)?
Think of yourself as a persuadable, target market. What arguments are most likely to work on you? Are you (teens) more persuaded by facts or emotions?

5 Know your audience and what motivates them.
Around the room are advertisements that want you or someone to buy the product they are selling. As you walk around the room, note the ad, what “argument” the ad is making, and who might be motivated by the ad’s rhetoric and why.

8 Ethos, Pathos, Logos Let’s share our advertisements! Turn to your neighbor and tell them about (or show them) your ad. Does it use ethos, pathos, or logos or a combination? Who is the target audience? Why would the ad appeal to that audience?

Transfer Task How Powerful Is the Media? On a daily basis you are most likely affected by some aspect of the media. As your life becomes more complex and challenging, you will need to intensify your critical thinking skills in order to sift through the images and messages brought to you through media channels. By researching and finding out the facts, you can learn what is actually true; then you can ask insightful questions, challenge messages presented to you, develop clear and logical arguments, and express those arguments in both written and oral forms. Media take many forms, known as channels. These channels include television, radio, the Internet, magazines, news broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, billboards—and the list grows as your world expands. Media messages are often about how to look, what to eat, and where to go. Many messages are helpful, but some can be harmful. Knowing the facts can empower you to understand the influence of the media on its audience and to become a sensible and informed consumer.

Media is … the various means of mass communication, such as radio, television, newspapers, and magazines. Add this definition to your academic vocab sheet!

13 Essential Questions 1) How much influence do advertisements have on what teenagers buy? Explain your answer.  2) How much influence do advertisements have on what you buy? Are your buying habits different from the buying habits of your friends or peers? Explain.  3) Does the media (TV, Instagram, magazine ads, You Tube videos, etc.) impact our world positively or negatively? Explain your thinking.
