Founding Founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) c. 400 BC
Hindu Prince (Brahmin) Grew up in the palace Little exposure to other castes.

Founding Legend Siddhartha leaves the palace and sees suffering, specifically old age, sickness, and poverty Realizes his status has not made him happy, leaves the palace for good and wanders seeking truth. No one or god could answer question of how to be happy. During meditation, receives flash of enlightenment that becomes the basics of the Buddhist faith

4 Noble Truths Believe in reincarnation (samsara)
Guiding principles 1. Life is suffering Believe in reincarnation (samsara) 2. Suffering is caused by desire 3. Ending desire will end suffering to reach enlightenment Nirvana: “blowing out” or “extinguishing” desire 4.The Eightfold Path is the way to end desire
