Cultural Differences in Colonial Texas
Distrust: The United States was a power on the rise, and Mexico feared it would try to take Texas; similar to the battles with filibusters. The U.S. had recently purchased the Louisiana territory. The U.S. offered to buy Texas for $1 million.

Different Views (the United States) The U.S. was born out of a revolution. The U.S. believed civilians should rule the country, that there should be separation between the Church and State, and they valued a self-government.

Different Views (Mexico) Three centers of power: The Army- did not have to answer to the civilians, could put someone in jail without charging them with a crime. The Catholic Church- leaders played an important role in government. Leaders of the Mexican Revolution also held power.

Slavery: Mexico did not allow slavery however, they let settlers to bring in slaves for a while. Later they tried to ban slavery but could not enforce it.
