Essential Question: How are temperature and kinetic energy related?
States of Matter Essential Question: How are temperature and kinetic energy related?
3
What is Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space.
4
The Law of Conservation of Mass:
Says that the mass of ALL substances present before a chemical change equals mass of ALL substance after the change. MATTER CAN NOT BE CREATED NOR DESTROYED.
5
What does Kinetic mean? Resulting from motion.
Kinetic Energy: Energy that results from motion.
6
What is Kinetic Theory?:
Explains how particles in matter behave. All matter is composed of particles
7
2. Particles are in constant , random motion.
8
3. Particles collide with each other and walls of their containers.
9
What are states of matter?
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma
10
Do Now:
11
Solids Characteristics: Definite Shape and Definite Volume.
Particles: Closely packed in geometric arrangement.
12
Liquids Characteristics: Indefinite shape and definite volume.
Particles: Have more space and slide past each other.
13
Gases Characteristics: Indefinite shape and Indefinite volume.
Particles: Have energy to spread out evenly in container.
14
Plasma Characteristic: High temperature gas.
Particles: Positively and negatively charge.
15
Temperature The state of a sample of matter depends on Temperature.
Temperature: related to the average kinetic energy of an objects atoms or molecules.
16
Thermal Expansion: When you buy soccer cleats do you buy your actual size or do you buy a size bigger or half a size bigger? Definition: Increase in the size of a substance when the temperature increases and contracts when cooled. Exception: Water- when cooled it expands.
