Chapter 18 – 1 Objectives Explain the breakdown in relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union after World War II. Explain how the policy of containment was used to slow/stop Soviet influence. Former Allies Clash The Truman administration established a policy of containment to block future Soviet expansion. Containment: Taking measures to prevent any extension of communist rule to other countries.

Truman Doctrine Declared that the U.S.;
Support any free country that resisted communism. Provided economic aid to help countries keep and support a democracy. Provided military support to help countries.

Marshall Plan Provided aid to all European countries that requested help to rebuild. This move was not against any country, but against hunger, poverty desperation, and chaos. Provided money, food and building materials. Page 606

Berlin Airlift – June 1948 Had no written agreement for free access to Berlin. Soviets blocked off all roads to and from Berlin in an effort to oust the Americans, French, and English. American and British began a series of flights to West Berlin to provide supplies. Airplanes took off and landed every few minutes, around the clock for 321 days. By May 1949, Soviets lift the blockade.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
U.S. and 10 other Western European nations come together to create a defensive alliance. This Cold War ended America’s hope of returning to isolationism. The U.S. becomes a superpower.
