Explain photosynthesis and the role that ATP plays
Season 3:Cell energy Episode 1: ATP and Photosynthesis Explain photosynthesis and the role that ATP plays
3
Energy Storing Compounds
Energy is the ability to do work An important chemical compound that cells use to store and release energy is adenosine triphosphate, abbreviated ATP. ATP is used by all types of cells as their basic energy source.
4
B. Chemical Energy and ATP
ATP consists of: i. adenine ii. ribose (a 5-carbon sugar) iii. 3 phosphate groups Adenine Ribose 3 Phosphate groups ATP
5
C. Reactions Reactant: Something that is needed for a reaction
Product: Something that comes out of a reaction
6
D. Requirements for Photosynthesis
The equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen Reactants: carbon dioxide, water, light Products: glucose (sugar), oxygen Light Light
7
G. Photosynthetic organisms are producers.
Producers make their own source of chemical energy. Plants use photosynthesis and are producers. Photosynthesis captures energy from sunlight to make sugars.
8
d. Chlorophyll is a green pigment molecule that absorbs light energy.
chloroplast leaf cell leaf i. In plants, chlorophyll is found in organelles called chloroplasts.
