3 Tarik is trying to save $265. 49 to buy a new tablet
Tarik is trying to save $ to buy a new tablet. Right now he has $40 and can save $38 a week from his allowance. Pink Packet 14

4 When will Tarik have enough money to buy the tablet?
Write and evaluate an expression to represent the amount of money saved after each week. Week 2 has been done as an example. 2 weeks = 3 weeks = 4 weeks = 5 weeks = 6 weeks = 7 weeks = 8 weeks = (2) = = 116 When will Tarik have enough money to buy the tablet? Pink Packet 14

5 When will Tarik have enough money to buy the tablet?
Answer Key: 2 weeks = 116 3 weeks = 154 4 weeks = 192 5 weeks = 230 6 weeks = 268 7 weeks = 306 8 weeks = 344 When will Tarik have enough money to buy the tablet? From 6 weeks and onward. Pink Packet 14

6 Write an inequality that will generalize the problem…
2 weeks = 116 3 weeks = 154 4 weeks = 192 5 weeks = 230 6 weeks = 268 7 weeks = 306 8 weeks = 344 Let “w” represents the amount of weeks it will take to save the money. 38w + 40 > Pink Packet 14

7 Why is it possible to have more than one solution?
It is possible because the minimum amount of money Tarik needs to buy the tablet is $ He can save more money than that, but he cannot have less than that amount. As more time passes, he will have saved more money. Therefore, any amount of time from 6 weeks onward will ensure he has enough money to purchase the tablet. So the minimum amount of money Tarik needs is $265.49, but he could have more but certainly not less. What inequality would demonstrate this? Greater than or equal to Pink Packet 15

8 Interpret the meaning of the 38 and 40 in the inequality
38w + 40 > The 38 represents the amount of money saved each week. As the weeks increase, the amount of money increases. The $40 was the initial amount of money saved, not the amount saved every week. Pink Packet 15

9 Exercise 1 Connor went to the county fair with a $22.50 in his pocket. He bought a hot dog and drink for $3.75 and then wanted to spend the rest of his money on ride tickets which cost $1.25 each. A) Write an inequality to represent the total spent where “r” is the number of tickets purchased. 1.25r < 22.50 Pink Packet 15

10 Connor will have enough money.
b) Connor wants to use this inequality to determine whether he can purchase 10 tickets. Use substitution to show whether or not he will have enough money. 1.25r < 22.50 1.25 (10) < 22.50 < 22.50 16.25 < 22.50 Connor will have enough money. Pink Packet 15

11 c) What is the total maximum number of tickets he can buy based upon the given information.
Use the 7 steps of algebra to solve this problem. The maximum number of tickets Connor can buy is 15 tickets. 1.25r < 22.50 1.25r r < Pink Packet 15

12 Let x represents the weight of one gift
Exercise 2 On a particular airline, checked bags can weigh no more than 50 pounds. Sally packed 32 pounds of clothes and five identical gifts in a suitcase that weigh 8 pounds. Write an inequality to represent this situation. 5x < 50 Let x represents the weight of one gift Pink Packet 16

13 Solve the inequality with the 7 steps of algebra
5x < 50 5x + 40 < 50 5x < 10 x < 2 Each of the 5 gifts can weigh 2 pounds or less. Pink Packet 16
