Linear Transformations and Standardized Scores
If a and b are constants, then Y(new) = bY(old) + a Rule for transforming and If you add (subtract) a constant from all scores, then you add (subtract) the same constant to, or from, the mean. If you multiply (divide) each score by a constant, then you multiply (divide) the mean by the same constant. Adding or subtracting a constant from all of the scores does NOT change the variance If you multiply (divide) each score by a constant, then you multiply (divide) the variance by the square of the constant In all cases, the relative relations between the scores are maintained.
