Location and Rock Type of
UK Aquifers The London aquifer is shown by the red box The chalk is the aquifer reservoir rock which outcrops at the N and S Downs This is also its zone of recharge at the unconfined part of the aquifer. The aquifer underneath London is confined by the impermeable London Clay of Palaeogene / Neogene age above. An aquiclude exists below the chalk and is made of the impermeable mudstone of the Gault Formation.
