Approved by the Statistical Commission at its 36th session in 2005 and adopted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by its resolution A/2005/13 Recognize population and housing censuses as one of the main sources of data for effective development planning and objective decision-making 3

Three essential goals are: To agree on international principles and recommendations to conduct a census To facilitate countries in conducting census at least once during the period To assist countries to disseminate census results in a timely manner UNSD undertakes various activities under the programme with three essential goals.

Goal 2: Facilitate countries in conducting censuses during the 2010 round 125 countries will have undertaken a census by the end of 2010 7 countries have not yet planned a census Major problems or needs for assistance: Funding Preparation and planning Cartography Management and quality assurance Data capture, especially scanning Data processing Dissemination and analysis Evaluation, Post enumeration surveys Others, including political problems 7

Provide information on census activities in the world: Monitoring census taking in countries and publishing a monthly “census clock” Publishing “Census News” on census activities Publishing a Newsletter on recent and upcoming census-related events Supporting activities (seminars, workshops...) conducted by different organizations
