After the establishment of chronic infection of hepatitis C virus, a subset of patients progresses into the next disease state assumedly through the interaction of host genetic, viral, and/or environmental risk factors. Risk allele A at rs is not associated with susceptibility to hepatitis C infection but is associated with occurrence of HCC. It remains to be determined exactly how risk allele A increases the risk of HCC development; for example by inducing chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis progression, or tumor formation.
