Friction When objects fall to Earth’s surface, gravity is not the only force that acts on them. Friction is a force that acts between surfaces that touch each other. Friction slows an objects motion.

Friction When an object is moving, friction pushes it in the opposite direction. If you push a book across the table, friction between the tabletop and the book slows the book’s motion.

Friction The types of surfaces affect the motion of friction.
Friction is greater between rough surfaces than between smooth surfaces. It is harder to push a box on a rough sidewalk than on a smooth wooden floor.
