2. Deployment Server 6.9 Reasons for WinPE 4.0 UEFI support Drivers
WinPE 2.1 does not support UEFI
WinPE 3.1 requires “Hybrid” mode (part UEFI, part BIOS), or full BIOS mode (legacy)
WinPE 4.0 works with both BIOS and UEFI
Drivers
WinPE 2.1 requires Windows Vista drivers
Many manufacturers no longer support Windows Vista
WinPE 4.0 requires Windows 8 drivers

3. Deployment Server 6.9 Windows ADK 8.0 Prerequisites
Microsoft Windows 2008 or newer OS
If the Deployment Server is on Windows 2003, the Windows ADK cannot be installed.
It might be possible to use WinPE 4.0 still, but it will need to be built on a different box
Microsoft .NET 4.0 (default in Windows 2008 R2 and 2012)
Windows 2008 and older Oses will require .NET 4.0 install, reboot required
If you don’t have .NET 4.0, Windows ADK will install it and force a reboot mid-install

Best Practice = install/upgrade DS and WinPE separate
It’s possible to include WinPE in the DS install/upgrade
Doing so will greatly increase the installation time
Doing so will increase chances of errors installing WinPE
Installing separately shows progress statuses, and minimizes errors

5. Step 1 – Download Windows ADK

6. Step 2 – Open Boot Disk Creator

7. Step 3 – Open Install Pre-Boot OS dialogue

8. Step 4 – Select WinPE 4.0 (x86 or x64) click Browse…

9. Step 5 – Browse to Windows ADK download location

10. Step 6 – Select adksetup.exe, click Open

12. Step 8 – Windows ADK Setup will run, leave defaults
