1 Properties of elements

2 Properties of Metals Physical Properties Chemical Properties Shininess or luster Malleable: material can be hammered into sheets or shapes Ductile: material can be pulled into wires Conductivity: object can transfer heat or electricity Magnetism Solids at room temperature Reactivity: ease and speed with which an element combines or reacts with other elements or compounds Corrosion: destruction of metal during a chemical change

3 Properties of Nonmetals
Physical Properties Chemical Properties 10 of 16 nonmetals are gases Dull and brittle Lower density Poor conductors of heat and electricity Good insulators Most nonmetals are reactive and form compounds

4 Metalloids Appear along the border of the metals and nonmetals
Have characteristics of both metals and nonmetals All are solids at room temperature, brittle, hard, and somewhat reactive Most common is silicon (sand, glass); Boron is used in making heat-resistant glass and cleaning materials Most useful property of the metalloids is their varying ability to conduct electricity Metalloids are used to make semiconductors, which are substances that can conduct electricity under some conditions but not under other conditions; computer chips, transistors, and lasers
