2 Declarative Sentences
Make a statement “I want to learn how to swim.” Express an opinion “5B is the best 5th grade class at MSA7.”

3 Imperative Sentences Gives a command Makes a request “Sit down now!”
“Please sit down and begin your work.”

4 Interrogative Sentences
Asks a question Often begins with who, what, where, when, why, how, or do “Why don’t you have your homework out?” “How difficult is it for you to work quietly?” “Did everyone really turn in their work on time?”

5 Exclamatory Sentences
Expresses great emotion, like surprise, excitement, anger, happiness, etc. “I am so excited for fall and cooler weather!” “I can’t wait for the weekend!”

7 Claims From the Latin word “clamare”
“to cry out, to shout” A claim is when someone says, “this is true!” When a person claims, they put forward their own idea as a fact. Does that mean a claim is factual? Pair/share and discuss with your partner.

8 Claims NO! A person can “claim” their idea is actual fact, but it is really an opinion! Which column has claims? Which column is not claims? ? McDonald’s French fries are delicious. McDonald’s French fries are a type of food. The author of the story likes furry animals. The author wrote a story about furry animals. Go Fish! is a fun and simple card game. Go Fish! is a card game.

9 Claims or not claims? Nikes are more fashionable than Reeboks.
Nike makes shoes for running. The bus driver cares about his passengers. The bus driver is paid to transport passengers. Television was a horrible invention. Television broadcasts many different shows.

10 A Claim is Highly Reasonable
It makes sense It’s rational, logical, and sound It isn’t impossible or unbelievable Unreasonable Highly Reasonable The school should cancel all learning so that students can spend all day relaxing, playing, and reenergizing. The school should offer students time each day to relax, play, and reenergize. Teachers ought to expect that parents will do all their kids’ homework for them. Teachers ought to expect that parents will sometimes help their kids with homework.

11 Can you make these reasonable?
Kids should only have to eat the food they want and not nasty vegetables. Teachers should never assign homework. Bedtime should be whenever a kid wants it to be. It is important that parents always say “Yes” to their kids and give them everything they want. All video games are educational and help children develop skills for life. The best animal in the world is a frog because I said so. Ms. Brown is the worst teacher in the world because she gives pop quizzes.

13 A claim is richly expressed
A richly expressed claim is on that has some ZING! ENERGY, ZIP, ZEST!! DULL Reasonable claim Richly Expressed, reasonable claim Bullying is bad and teachers should tell that to kids It is critical that teachers send the clear message that bullying will not be tolerated at school. Ice cream cake is good to serve at birthday parties. Serving vanilla-and-chocolate-swirl ice cream cake adds an extra dash of awesomeness to a kid’s birthday party.

16 Claims are well-written

Doctors agree that eating too much candy is detrimental to a child’s health. Sleepover partys can be fun but usually a kid doesn’t, get 2 much sleep Sleepover parties can be fun, but usually a kid doesn’t get too much sleep.

17 Basic Editing - An important step!
Capitalization Each sentence starts with a capital letter. All names of people and places begin with a capital letter. Titles in a person’s name begin with a capital letter. Each important word in a title begins with a capital letter. Punctuation Quotation marks surround all words that are part of a direct quote. Commas separate items in a list. All sentences end with a period or other appropriate ending punctuation. Spelling and Sentences Words are spelled correctly. If you are using a computer, remember to use the spell-check function. All sentences are complete and include a subject and verb. All subjects and verbs agree.
