People can write whatever they like in the comments You can see content that’s inappropriate There are a lot of adverts that are not always age appropriate The negative attitudes of some YouTubers Positives: Following your favourite YouTubers Listening to music Educational videos Ways to stay safe: Have open discussions with your child about what they are watching Younger YouTube users should be in the same room as yourself If using a device to view Videos consider YouTube Kids Share sandra F**** scrambled eggs story Autoplay

4 Things to watch out for:
Receiving friend requests or messages from people they don’t know, not all people on Facebook are genuine Safety filters do not block inappropriate content on Facebook Seeing inappropriate or upsetting posts or pages that are shared Positives: You can use it to communicate with friends and family around the world. It helps you to keep up to date with what’s going on with friends and in the news. It’s entertaining as there are lots of funny videos and memes that are shared. Ways to stay safe: Share passwords with children Regularly check privacy settings – especially following updates Report any inappropriate users or posts to Facebook admin.

5 Take an interest in games your child is playing
Talk to them about who they are playing with online and the type of language that is being used Use the age ratings as a guide to what may be included in the game Gaming can be addictive – agree a time limit or set up a screen time block Talk to your child about sharing personal information online

6 Things to watch out for:
There are in-app purchases You might play with people you don’t know and they can message mean things There is some violence which might be upsetting to younger players Positives: You can be creative and build your own world If you don’t join a server then you can just play it with people you know The chat is moderated Ways to stay safe: Turn off any chat features through the app – this can be accessed in settings In app purchases can be blocked in settings of the device you are using Whilst Minecraft is often played by younger users please do not assume that it is completely safe – monitor as thoroughly as other Social Media platforms

7 General Safety Tips: Mobile Devices e.g. Ipad In the settings section click on the ‘screen time’ option. From here you can set downtime for screens to go off, time limits for certain apps, content restrictions, in app purchases can be blocked. Disable location services for some apps as these can show other users where you are. If you have multiple devices you can also set up family Screen time which will allow you to monitor the apps your child is using. Parental controls via internet provider Update your filter settings on your desktop computer through your internet provider – different providers will have different methods of doing this. 9 What is happening in school?
Sensitive data only accessed on school devices Strict filtering monitored by Gateshead Council – further filtering on student accounts No unsupervised internet use – often computer connected to main projector Lots of opportunities to use ICT and discussions around keeping safe online Safer Internet Day held every year Opportunities to communicate with other schools using safe platform – E-Twinning E-Twinning is an extremely safe platform for your child to be able to use the internet as a communication tool.
