8 Position of the earth relative to the sun on the two equinoxes.
The equinox is the date when the sun's vertical rays strike at 0o latitude (the equator). On this day there is equal day and night (12 hours daylight and 12 hours of night) at all place. The spring or vernal equinox occurs on about March 21. The autumnal equinox occurs on about September 23.

9 Position of the earth relative to the sun on the two solstices.
The solstice is the time during the winter or summer when the sun's vertical rays are furthest from the equator. During the summer solstice, about June 22, the subsolar point is 23.5o north latitude (Tropic of Cancer). The winter solstice occurs on about December 22 with the subsolar point located at 23.5o south latitude (Tropic of Capricorn).
