Auxiliaries Auxiliaries : Be, Do, Have Examples : - Are you happy? - Do you want some tea? - Have you received the letter? Explanation: - BE is used to ask questions about the feelings, emotions and state of the person. - DO is used with action verbs, and to make polite requests and possession. - HAVE is mostly used with the Present perfect tense. Additional explanation: BE is also used to ask about somebody’s age – Are you 25 years old? DO is also used to ask if an object is in the possession of someone – Do you have a pen?

Tag Questions Normally used to confirm statements and to show approval. --- Note that the confirmation can be either positive or negative. There are two parts in this sentence structure. If the first part of the sentence has a positive verb, the tag question will be in the negative in the second part. Example: - You are happy, aren’t you? - You eat seafood, don’t you? - You have 2 brothers, haven’t you? - You are not happy, are you? - You don’t eat seafood, do you? - You have not received the letter, have you? (note that here also, HAVE is used in the present perfect tense) EXPLANATION: We do write ‘You haven’t the letter, have you?’ because it is informal, spoken language. Rather, the proper English sentence (written) would be : ‘You don’t have the letter, do you?’ And as stated above, you use the Present perfect tense to confirm the statement.
