Millions Lab Scientific Investigation
Objective: with your team, devise and plan an experiment for measuring/counting 1,000,000 grains of sand so we can see what 1,000,000 grains of sand looks like. Your plan should meet the following criteria: Data collection is able to be carried out in 1 period. Uses only the following materials: sand grains, measuring cups of various sizes up to 5 gallons, a digital scale, plastic tubs, popsicle sticks. Includes a scientific question, your group’s hypothesis, and a procedure that ensures your experimental results are reproducible (10% or less error). You may include pictures/images if this is helpful.

Lab Group Roles Recorder: Keeps a typed/written record of the groups thoughts and ideas. Makes sure the groups slide show final draft is ready for submission. Recorder Name:_______________________ Reporter: Shares out the groups ideas and explains the group’s procedure if/when needed. Also helps with the creation of the slide show. Reporter Name:_______________________ Materials Manager: Gets materials for the group when needed. Manages time for the group. Makes sure the groups work area is cleaned up.Also helps with the creation of the slide show. Materials Manager Name:_______________________
3
Millions Lab Question Your group needs to pose a scientific question. A scientific question is one that can be answered with evidence and supported by data. Pose your question is the space below:
4
Millions Lab Hypothesis
Your group needs to make a prediction using an if-and-then statement. You may use the following template as an example if you like: If my group counts/measures sand by _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ (briefly describe your procedure in the space above) Then we predict the a million grains of sand will measure/count out to ____________. (state your prediction in the space above)
5
Millions Lab Procedure
Describe in detail the test/experiment your group would like to carry out. List the materials you plan to use and how you will use them. Write out and number your steps clearly so that if another group follows your procedure they are likely to reproduce the same results. Materials: Procedure/Steps (create more slides if necessary)
