Childhood: Her childhood most likely fueled her to become an activist. Her mother was killed when she put up a fight against being raped by three white men. Bates took her anger not out on anyone, but on a right for change.

Important facts… The identity of Daisy Bates parents has not been discovered. Before the age of 7, she was taken in as a foster child. At the age of 15, she met her future husband, L. C. Bates. In 1957, she encouraged nine black students, including herself, to enroll into a white school which was a very big step. This led to national and international recognition for their courage and persistence to fight for what they believed in.
