2 EXPLANATORY ESSAY DAY 2 SUBTOPICS RESEARCH NOTE TAKING
By the end of today’s class, you will have completed at least one subtopic’s worth of notes for your explanatory essay.

3 SUBTOPICS For your explanatory essay, you will be writing about STREET ART. But you must have THREE SUBTOPICS worth of information to guide your essay’s discussion of the MAIN TOPIC.

4 SUBTOPICS Subtopics are mini-topics that are all clustered beneath the main topic. For example, if I were writing an explanatory essay about SOCCER, my SUBTOPICS might include RULES, POSITIONS, and FAMOUS PLAYERS. You Try: Your main topic is VIDEO GAMES. **Turn and talk with neighbor to find 3 subtopics.**

5 SUBTOPICS Before we commit to our three subtopics for the explanatory essay, let’s look at the sources compiled for us first: What WORDS do you see in each of the sources that look or sound important? Are any of them vocabulary from yesterday?

6 SUBTOPICS It’s time to decide the subtopics for our explanatory essay. We need to choose three: 1) 2) 3)

7 HOW TO TAKE NOTES FOR A SOURCE
In order to actually write about each of your subtopics, you have to be able to 1) READ your sources and 2) TAKE NOTES on the sources you have read. Mr. P will show you how to take notes on a subtopic given a source. He is passing out a graphic organizer for you to use. Listen closely.

8 HOW TO TAKE NOTES FOR A SOURCE
You will now complete the EXACT SAME PROCESS using your Informative Writing Packet. Go to the second page where it says “Lesson 8: Research and Note-taking” at the top. Write your first sub-topic at the top of the page and start reading your sources and taking notes on them. Be sure to record your sources at the bottom. LOOK AT MR. P’S EXAMPLE IF YOU’RE STUCK

9 HOW TO TAKE NOTES FOR A SOURCE
By the end of class, you need to have completed AT LEAST ONE subtopic’s worth of notes. WORK QUIETLY so that Mr. P can assess your progress as he walks by. I need to be able to help! At _____________, we will come together as a class to go over the assignment expectations.
