Physical Characteristic of Gases
Chapter 13 Chemistry
2
The Kinetic-Molecular Theory of Matter
The kinetic-molecular theory is based on the idea that particles of matter are always in motion. The theory is used to explain properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
3
The Kinetic-Molecular Theory of Matter
An ideal gas is an imaginary gas that perfectly fits all the assumptions of the kinetic-molecular theory.
4
The Nature of Gases Expansion- gases do not have a definite shape or volume Compressibility- Gases can be forced to fit in a smaller volume Diffusion- spontaneous mixing of particles.
5
A Real Gas A Real Gas is a gas that does not behave completely according to the assumptions of the theory
6
Pressure Pressure is defined as force per unit area on a surface.
Pressure = Force Area
7
Atmospheric Pressure
8
Atmospheric Pressure
9
Measuring pressure A barometer is a device used to measure atmospheric pressure
10
Units of Pressure One atmosphere is the average atmospheric pressure at sea level and 0o C. 1 Atm = 760 mmHg 760 torr 101.3 kPa
11
Standard Temperature and Pressure
Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP) are the standard conditions of exactly 1 atm and 0O C.
