1. Welcome to Naviance at Lowell High School

Lowell High School has signed on with a company called Naviance. Naviance is a college and career readiness program that will allow all students at Lowell High to have a clear personalized plan for both their high school and post-secondary careers. We are really excited to have this program at our school. Hundreds of other high schools already use Naviance and once they got used to using it, they all say that it is an amazing program. Get used to hearing the word “Naviance” a lot between now and when you graduate! You will be going into a computer lab like this one twice a year to use it as a class. Once in the fall and once in the spring. We will also spend a lot of time in Advisory explaining how to use the key features of the program. Naviance is a website so you will be able to log in from anywhere you have internet access and you can use it as much as you like. Your school address has been entered into your account and your guidance counselor will be able to communicate a lot of great information to you via . So, we are going to briefly show you some of the things you can do on Naviance. There is a lot more than what we will cover, but we want you to know the key parts of the program. (Next slide)

Four of the key areas that you will use Naviance for are: Career Planning, College Planning, Success Planning, and communicating with your guidance counselor via . With Career Planning, you will be able to do Career Interest Inventories where you will answer a set of questions about activities you like to do, your personal qualities, and school subjects that you enjoy the most. Your results will show you the fields and specific careers that you might enjoy and be successful at. There is also a Personality Inventory that links your personality type to potential careers. Lastly, the career planning piece allows you to create a resume.
With College Planning, you can conduct different college searches where you will answer a number of questions and a potential college list will be created. Once you have that list, you can research all of the details about that college. When you become a senior, you will actually have to use Naviance in order to apply to college. You will request official transcripts, recommendation letters, and other School Forms for each college application. You will need to enter the names of colleges you are applying to and other important information so your guidance counselor knows where and when to send application materials.
With Success Planning, you will be able to see specific “tasks” that your guidance counselor wants you to complete during each year of high school. This will be a great way for you to make sure you stay on track to having a successful high school and post secondary career. The nice part about Naviance is that all of the information we just described to you can be saved in your individual Naviance account so you can refer to everything in one place.
Lastly, as we have mentioned already, you will be able to communicate with your guidance counselor via through your Naviance account. You will see that you will want to check your student account often once you start using Naviance. (Next Slide)

3. Getting Started Go to the Lowell High website:
Click on “Naviance” at the top right corner
Select “Student Login” from the dropdown.
Your Username and Password are your LHS ID #
Type in your LHS ID# as your username and password.
Then click “Log In.”
You DO NOT need to click “I Need To Register” under the “Are You New Here Box.”
You will login to Naviance in a minute, but before we do, we want to show you a few screens on this slideshow so you know what to expect. To login, you go to Lowell High’s website and select, “Naviance” up at the top right corner of the homepage. Then, simply select, “Student Login,” from the dropdown menu. It would be a good idea to save the login screen as a Favorite on your own computer so you don’t forget how to find it.
The next piece of information is VERY IMPORTANT: Your username and password to Naviance is your Lowell High Student ID#. The 6-digit number.
When you go into Naviance for the first time, you do not need to click on the “I need to register” button. You are already registered. (Next slide)

4. Log In:http://lhs.lowell.k12.ma.us
Click “Naviance,” then “Student Login”
Let’s start by going to the Lowell High Website (lhs.lowell.k12.ma.us). Then click on “Naviance” and then select “Student Login,” from the dropdown menu.

Enter your LHS ID # as your username AND password.
Then click “Log In” (Next slide)

Once you login, you will come to the LHS Naviance Home Page. This will be updated on a regular basis with general important information. This is also where you will see if you have any new messages. There will also be links to important websites. As you can see, there are four main Tabs at the top of the page: Colleges, Careers, About Me, and My Planner. Let’s take a look at each one briefly. (Next slide)

7. Colleges Tab Colleges Tab
The first Tab is the Colleges Tab. When you click on this tab you will see this screen. This is where you will be able to do different types of college searches, find out more information on specific colleges, and keep track of colleges that you are both thinking about, and then eventually colleges that you are definitely applying to. There is also a list of upcoming college rep visits to Lowell High. Juniors and seniors who want to attend any of these rep visits, need to go here to sign up. (Next Slide)

8. Careers Tab Careers Tab
The next Tab is the Careers Tab. This is where you will be able to do the Career Interest and Personality Surveys that we mentioned earlier. Once you have completed your surveys and created a list of potential careers you are interested in, there is an amazing amount of information on thousands of careers in Naviance. We highly recommend that you spend a lot of time on your own using this piece of the site. On the Careers Page, you will see a link to something called “Roadtrip Nation,” at the bottom. This is an exciting feature that contains over 3,500 video interviews from all different types of leaders in the world. In the interviews, these leaders explain some of the obstacles that they overcame on their road to success. They also explain their career in detail, how they got to where they are, and some of the things they love and things they dislike with their career. (Next slide)

9. About Me Tab About Me Tab
The About Me Tab is the place where all of your personal information is stored. All of the results from your career interest and personality surveys are saved here. Your lists of careers and colleges that you are interested in are saved here. This is also where you will be able to keep track of all of the “tasks” that your guidance counselor has assigned to you. You will be able to see which ones you have completed and which ones you still need to work on. A few other pieces that can be found on the About Me Tab are your resume once you create one, your test scores (PSAT, SAT, etc), and your overall Portfolio. (Next slide)

On the My Planner Tab, you will be able to keep track of your goals, your To-Do List, Tasks, and any upcoming deadlines that you need to meet. (Next slide)

Click on “Let’s Begin” at the bottom of the screen

Read the full report to explore your natural talents
Add your Top 3 Career Pathways to your Naviance account
Today, you will log on to Naviance to complete the Strengths Explorer assessment. Once you complete the survey you will read the full report to find out more about your natural talents based on how you answered the questions. You will then click on “See Related Career Pathways” for a list of potential careers related to your natural strengths and abilities that you might be interested in researching. Read through the list and select your Top 3 Career Pathways to add to your Naviance account. To complete today’s lesson, first, you will go to the Naviance Log In page and log in to your account. Then you will click on the “About Me” Tab. Then click on “Strengths Explorer,” in the “My Assessments” Box. Next, click on “Okay, let’s get started.” Answer each question and select “next question” to move onto the next page. When you are done the survey, read the full report on the right hand margin to review your related career pathways. Then, add your Top 3 related Career Pathways to your Naviance account. (Next slide)

12. About Me Tab About Me Tab Click “Strengths Explorer”
Once you are logged in, click on the “About Me” Tab. Your screen should look like this. Then click on “Strengths Explorer” in the “My Assessments” Box. (Next slide)

When you finish the Strengths Explorer Survey, you will come to your Strengths Explorer Results Page. It will look like this. Your Top 3 themes will be listed at the top. Click “View Full Report,” to read more about your natural talents. Then click “See Related Career Pathways” to research related careers. (Next Slide)

15. Add Pathways to Your Account
Click here to add Pathways that you’re interested in
Once you have read the full report, you should research the related career pathways. Identify 3 of your top choices and add the pathway to your Naviance account, by selecting “Add This Pathway To Your List.” Click on each of your top 3 pathways to find out more information about that career. Read the job description to learn more about that career, plus related college majors. (Next Slide)

Spend time on your own researching related career pathways through your Naviance account.
