Use ir a + infinitive in the imperfect to state what someone was going to do. Iba a estudiar, pero... I was going to study, but . . . Ir a + infinitive is followed by a verb in the preterite when the second verb refers to a completed action or to a condition that ended. Iba a llamarte, pero se me olvidó. Mis padres iban a ver la película, pero llegaron tarde.

Ir a + infinitive is followed by another verb in the imperfect when the second verb refers to an ongoing state or condition in the past. Nosotros íbamos a jugar al fútbol, pero teníamos mucha tarea. Eduardo iba a salir, pero se sentía muy cansado.
