You will need 22 index cards. On one side you will write the vocabulary term used in STAAR test and on the other the definition so that you can review at home!

REALISTIC FICTION: type of fiction story that can possibly happen in real life
PLOT: the sequence of main events in a story
1. EXPOSITION: introduces the characters, setting, theme, and basic situation
2. MAIN CONFLICT: the problem faced by the main character(s)
3. RISING ACTION: events that create tension and suspense in a story
4. CLIMAX: the turning point in a story’s sequence of events
5. FALLING ACTION: events that decrease tension in a story
6. RESOLUTION / DENOUEMENT: how the story ends

CHARACTER: an individual (usually a person) in a story
MOTIVATION: the reason a character acts a certain way
CONFLICT
INTERNAL CONFLICT: the struggle occurring within a character (person vs. self)
EXTERNAL CONFLICT: the struggle occurring outside of a character (person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. society)

IMAGERY: language that creates mental images
FLASHBACK: when the story goes back to an earlier time in a character’s life
SETTING’S INFLUENCE: when time and place affect the plot, characters, mood, or theme of a story
POINT OF VIEW: how the author allows you to “see” and “hear” what’s going on
1st PERSON: the narrator is a character in the story (I, me, we…)
3rd PERSON LIMITED: the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character (him, she…)
3rd PERSON OMNISCIENT: the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters (they, them, she…)

FORESHADOWING: when the author provides a hint about what’s to come later in the story
GENRE: a category of literature
NON-REALISTIC FICTION: stories that are made-up and DO NOT seem like they could happen
SCIENCE FICTION: stories that take place in the future, or on other planets, or involve time travel, space travel, etc.
FANTASY FICTION: stories that involve magic, or other supernatural phenomena BE
