3 Mary Shelley Born 1797 to Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin
Both parents were pioneers in Women’s rights and Education. Her mother died 10 days after her birth

4 Childhood Received no formal education, but took part in lively intellectual conversations with her father and his friends Was encouraged to read from her father’s library Listened to Coleridge recite “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” which influenced her as she wrote Frankenstein

5 Marriage Married Percy Shelley in 1816
Percy drowned in 1822, leaving Mary to support herself and her son. Had 4 children, Only 1 lived past childhood

7 It’s Alive! Alive! Frankenstein was written after Shelley spent time with her husband and friends They sat around thinking of “ghost” stories and Shelley came up with this monster story

Originally, it was published in She did not put her name on it. Was published again in 1831 with her name as the author.

10 Frankenstein 1931-First Frankenstein Movie made by Universal Studios. Monster could not speak. Ends with Monster consumed by fire.

11 Bride of Frankenstein 1935-Monster learns to speak, and understand. Gains Human characteristics. Wants a Bride/Companion. Ends with monster in an explosion.

12 Son of Frankenstein 1939-Son of Scientist finds monster in a comatose state. Brings him back to consciousness, only to later push him into a bubbling, smoking pit of sulfur.

13 Ghost of Frankenstein 1942-Monster is alive, but buried in sulphur. Ygor (the Scientist’s helper from Son of Frankenstein) digs him out and becomes his friend. Convinces a different son of Frankenstein to replace the monster’s sick brain with his (Ygor’s) brain.

14 Frankenstein movies The monster becomes known as Frankenstein after a series of campy “horror” flicks in which the monster makes an appearance. The image of the monster becomes a staple of modern pop culture.
