Field Leader (Hiking) For your event to be of the highest quality, two things must happen: The participants’ needs MUST come first during every stage of planning and delivery You must be passionate about your leadership role, and passion comes from having your needs met too! Slide 3

4 Field Leader (Hiking) Balancing your needs and those of the participants' requires understanding what motivates us. Then, recognize motivations that: Are satisfied through the event. These we should treasure. 2. Have no place on our event. These we must do in our own time. 3. Are in conflict, but must be met anyway. These we must balance. Slide 4

Field Leader (Hiking) Self Assessment Exercise Write down the reasons why you like going outdoors. Using one colour, circle the motivations that are compatible with leading events. Using a different colour, circle motivations that are not compatible Using a third colour, circle motivations that are created by leading a group outdoors AND compatible. (Feel free to write additional motivations) Write down potential negative impacts of leading outdoors and circle those with a fourth colour. Slide 6
