2
Characteristics of Life What makes something alive???
3
These are the official Characteristics of life:
*Organization *Homeostasis/Regulation *Reproduction *Cellular Respiration(energy) *Growth *Development *Adaptation & Evolution Respond to stimulus
4
1. Organization - a high degree of order
All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. (Unicellular or Multicellular)
5
ORGANIZATION All living things show orderly structure or organization
6
Levels of Organization Atoms
Smallest particle of an element with the properties of that element.
7
Levels of organization - Molecules
Two or more atoms bonded together
8
Levels of organization - Organelle
Structures inside eukaryote cells that perform specific functions
9
Levels of organization - Cell
Smallest Unit of Life
10
Levels of organization - Tissues
Group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
11
Levels of organization - Organ
Structure composed of several tissues that forms a specific function.
12
Levels of organization Organ System
Circulatory system
13
Organism - Multicellular
14
Levels of Organization
15
Levels of Organization Number 1-8 & put in order according to size.

16
A response to maintain stability, or homeostasis (internal balance).
Maintaining Homeostasis A response to maintain stability, or homeostasis (internal balance).
17
Maintaining Homeostasis
thirsty drink water body temp. at 98.6 pH electrolytes micro & macro excretion
18
2. Reproduction Asexual one parent Sexual two parents
This is the only life process that individuals do not need to survive. Reproduction is essential for the continuation of the organism’s species. Species - a group of organisms that can interbred & produce a fertile offspring.
19
Cellular Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36 ATP
The release of energy from food. The MITOCHONDRIA is where this happens. Most life forms receive energy from the breakdown of glucose. glucose C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36 ATP
20
Growth/Development From one cell, we grow/develope into a multi-cellular organism.
21
4. Growth & Development: increasing in size and progressing through a life cycle
22
Development: Developmental stages for humans include birth infancy, childhood, puberty, adulthood, old age & death.
23
Frogs and most insects go through metamorphosis.
24
Adaptation Any structure, behavior, or internal process that allows an organism to respond to stimuli & better survive in an environment is called an adaptation. A gradual accumulation of adaptations over time is evolution.
25
Characteristics of Life
8. Evolution: As a group, living organisms change over time.
26
Ability to react to external condition
All living things Response to a Stimuli Ability to react to external condition Cold - shiver Run - heart beat increases Food - salivate Pet the squirrel - happy squirrel or bloody finger
