1 Mirror Reflections and Images

2 Terms Light ray: a line and arrow that represents the direction of light

3 Transparent: a material that transmits all or almost all of light
Translucent: a material that transmits some light but absorbs or reflects the rests Opaque: a material that does not transmit any light, it is either all absorbed or reflected

4 Mirrors An image is a reproduction of the original image that is produced through the use of light.

5 A mirror is any polished surface that exhibits reflection
A reflection is the bouncing back of light from any surface

6 Plane Mirror Terms Plane mirror: flat mirror
Incident ray: incoming ray

7 Reflected ray: ray that bounces off a reflective surface
Normal: the perpendicular line to a mirrored surface

8 Angle of incidence: the angle between the incidence ray and the normal
Angle of reflection: the angle between the reflected ray and the normal

9 The Laws of Reflection Both the incident ray and the reflected ray behaves in a predictable pattern, however, the surface affects the way we see the reflected ray. 1. the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection 2. the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal ray all lie on the same plane.

11 Specular reflection The reflection of light off of a smooth, shiny surface

12 Diffuse reflection The reflection of light off of a dull or irregular surface.
