2 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece Greece is a peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea. It is located on the continent of Europe.

3 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece 3. Physical characteristics:
The land in Greece is rocky and mountainous. Farmers in ancient Greece grew grapes and olives.

4 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece 4. Ancient Greece was a group of city-states. Athens and Sparta are the most famous.

5 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece 5. The Greeks built temples, each with a long inner room surrounded by columns. 6. The Parthenon in Athens is still standing on a hill called the Acropolis.

6 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece 7. People worshipped many gods and goddesses. The Olympic Games began as a festival to honor Zeus, the chief god.

10. Girls were taught at home. 11. Only men were citizens and could vote. 12. Women took care of the children.

9 SOL 3.1 Ancient Greece 13. Government: Greece was the birthplace of democracy. In 510BC a new way of government was invented in Athens. 'Demokratia', from which we get our word 'democracy', means 'rule by the people'. Any man with full citizen rights could go to the assembly, where they could speak and vote freely. Public debates like this decided how the city was run.
