4 Properties of acids An acid is a substance that tastes sour, reacts with metals and carbonates, and turns blue litmus paper red. Taste sour. Never use this to test acids. Reacts with metals Corrosive: acids eat away at metals. Used in metal etching Reacts with carbonates Geologist use this feature to test the carbonate ions in limestone. The reaction produces CO2 Reacts with indicators Indicators: a compound that changes color when in contact with an acid or base.

5 Properties of bases A base is a substance that tastes bitter, feels slippery, and turns red litmus paper blue. The opposite of acids. Bitter taste Soaps, shampoos, detergents (again, do not use this as a test for bases) Feel slippery Reacts with indicators

6 Uses of acids and bases Acids and bases have many uses around the home and in industry. Morter and cement Home cleaners Baking and cooking
