1 “Fear of God” Psalms 34:7-11 03/20/2011 Dr. Dane Boyles

2 Job 28:20-21 20 Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds in the sky.

3 Job 28:22-23 22 Destruction and Death say, “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.” 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,

4 Job 28:24-25 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. 25 When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,

5 Job 28:26-27 26 when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, 27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it.

6 Job 28:28 28 And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”

7 “Fear of God” God says it. Moses. The prophets. The apostles.

8 “Fear of God” Jesus himself. Moses at the burning bush.
Isaiah in the temple.

9 “Fear of God” Pharaoh when the plagues began to fall.
The Babylonian king Belshazzar. The disciples.

10 “Fear of God” 35 …“This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” (Luke 9:35) 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. (Psalms 34:7)

11 Psalms 34:9, 11 9 Fear the LORD, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. 11 Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

12 “Fear of God” To Fear God Is Smart
To be in utter, absolute awe of God. To have reverence for God;

13 Job 1:1 1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

14 Job 1:5 5 he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” (Job 1:5)

15 “Fear of God” The fear of dishonoring or displeasing your Father in heaven. Joseph ran from the seductress. The disciples.

16 “Fear of God” The Other Side of Fear
“To fear God is to stand in awe of God.” To be afraid of God is to run away from him.

17 Romans 8:15 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

18 1 John 4:16-17 16 … God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment.

19 1 John 4:18 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

20 Psalms 147:11 11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

21 “Fear of God” How to Learn to Fear the Lord
31 The early church was going on in the fear of the Lord. (Acts 9:31)

22 “Fear God” The fear of God comes from developing a consciousness of God. Encompassing the whole reality of God like Job.…really dealing with the reality of God.

23 “Fear of God” 36 “Don’t be afraid; just go on believing.” (Mark 5:36)
27 …“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27)

24 Mark 12:23 23 …“Everything is possible for one who believes.”

25 “Fear of God” This means amplifying the Word of God and not simplifying it. Where you unroll a biblical principle and apply it to your situation. That’s what it means to fear the LORD.

26 Job 28:20-21 20 Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds in the sky.

27 Job 28:22-23 22 Destruction and Death say, “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.” 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,

28 Job 28:24-25 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. 25 When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,

29 Job 28:26-27 26 when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, 27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it.

30 Job 28:20-28 28 And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”
