PREPARING FOR FAFSA The WHAT, WHY, & HOW
2
What is the FAFSA? FREE Application for Federal Student Aid
“The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.” It contains the information an institution uses to determine financial aid for a student INCLUDING low-interest government student loans.
3
Who should complete the FAFSA?
Even if you plan on going into the military or straight to the work- force, you should complete the FAFSA in a timely fashion because you might change your mind. Even if you think your family may not qualify for any financial aid, you should complete the FAFSA because circumstances can change AND completing the FAFSA is the only way to access low-interest financial aid in the form of government student loans. Who should complete the FAFSA? EVERYONE!
4
FAFSA opens October 1 It’s best to complete it sooner than later!

So, now what? First – Create your FSA ID
The handout walks you through all the information you need to gather before you do your FSA ID. Please take it home and complete as soon as you can. If you have your FSA ID done before October 1, you’ll be able to complete the FAFSA in one sitting. Otherwise, it will take more steps to complete it. Remember, unless you are filing as independent, your parents must create their own FSA ID as well.

Btw, It’s FAFFFFFSA (NOT FASSSSSFA)
