Background Work on classification of urban and rural area within unit D2 Rural / Urban regions according to OECD definition Degree of Urbanisation for labour force survey GISCO has had several different tasks during the last year. As many of the points will be presented later, I will concentrate on the update of the database including the quality control, the Farm Structure Survey project, the TANDEM project, the GIS WG for the WFD and briefly explain about the various GIS projects to which GISCO participates. GISCO working group meeting 23-24/10/2003

Method Approach Use of OECD criteria
Classification based on grids cells of equal size Comparison with classification results derived from commune and region boundaries GISCO has had several different tasks during the last year.
7
Method Original OECD Concept Classification of regions into 3 classes
Basic criterion: population density of local units Urban local units > 150 inh/km² Classification of Regions (NUTS 3): Pre-dominantly urban >85% in urban local units Intermediate 50% - 85% live in urban local units Pre-dominantly rural <50% in urban local units GISCO has had several different tasks during the last year. As many of the points will be presented later, I will concentrate on the update of the database including the quality control, the Farm Structure Survey project, the TANDEM project, the GIS WG for the WFD and briefly explain about the various GIS projects to which GISCO participates. Method Modified OECD Concept Classification of regions into 3 classes
Basic criterion: population density of grid cells Urban grid cells > 150 inh./sq.km Classification of Regions (NUTS 3): Pre-dominantly urban >85% in urban local units Intermediate 50% - 85% live in urban local units Pre-dominantly rural <50% in urban local units GISCO has had several different tasks during the last year. Conclusions Approach is feasible
Produces more consistent results according to specifications Lack of absolute population threshold for urban area produces some unexpected results Influence of administrative regions not eliminated due to NUTS 3 aggregation GISCO has had several different tasks during the last year.
