Method Qualitative survey Pilot test for a larger study
Local participant pool Goal to determine characteristics of a good flight instructor Participants will have the opportunity to name instructors that they think are good. Instructional records of named instructors will be compared to the departmental average to see if there is a quantitative difference Pilot test for a larger study

Why? Flight training is expensive Flight training is difficult
Good CFIs may reduce training time Flight training is difficult Good CFIs may maintain motivation and encouragement Flight instructors are becoming more rare Airlines taking experienced instructors. Understanding what makes a “good” CFI may allow avenues for better compensation and establishment of flight instruction as more of a career unto itself.
