1 Human Body Systems Group #4 - Control
The Nervous System The Senses System The Endocrine System

2 The Nervous System - Functions
Controls the body’s development and function Helps the body respond and adjust to the external environment Helps the body internally with chemical balance Conscious mind (voluntary, somatic) Subconscious mind (involuntary, autonomic)

3 The Nervous System - Structures
Cells – neurons (nerve cells) Tissue - nervous tissue Organs Brain Spinal cord

4 The Nervous System - Interactions
Skeletal – controlled by the brain Muscular – controlled by the brain Integumentary (Skin) – contains nerve cells that sense pressure and temperature Digestive – controlled by the brain

5 The Nervous System - Interactions
Respiratory – controlled by the brain Cardiovascular – controlled by the brain Lymphatic – controlled by the brain Immune – controlled by the brain

6 The Senses - Functions Receive, carry, and send messages between the body, the spinal cord, and the brain

7 The Senses - Structures
Cells – nerve cells Tissues – nervous tissue Organs Eyes – vision Ears – hearing and balance Skin – pressure and temperature Nose – smell Tongue - taste

8 The Senses - Interactions
Skeletal – carries out directions from the brain Muscular – carries out directions from the brain Skin – senses the surroundings Cardiovascular – carries out directions from the brain Digestive – carries out directions from the brain

9 The Senses - Interactions
Respiratory – carries out directions from the brain Excretory – carries out directions from the brain Endocrine – carries out directions from the brain

10 The Endocrine System – Functions
Releases chemicals (hormones) that help direct the activities of the body to maintain proper function Controls metabolism (chemical reactions) in the body Helps control growth, development, and reproduction

11 The Endocrine System – Structures
Cells – epithelial cells Tissues – epithelial tissue embedded within surrounding connective tissue

12 The Endocrine System – Structures
Organs – Glands Hypothalamus – a main link between glands and the brain Pituitary – another main link between the glands and the brain Thyroid – controls rate of burning energy (metabolism) Parathyroid – calcium regulation Adrenal – control amounts of salt and water in body as well as stress response and response to disease Pancreas – insulin for maintaining blood sugar levels Pineal – regulates sleep cycle Ovaries/Testes - reproduction

13 The Endocrine System – Interactions
Cardiovascular – hormones transported by blood stream; hormones help regulate blood pressure and heart rate Digestion – regulates blood sugar & calcium

14 The Endocrine System – Interactions
Nervous & Senses – communicates with brain to control body
